Phase III (2012 - 2016)

Phase III (2012 - 2016)

The 3rd phase of integrated development (Jan. 01, 2012 – Dec. 31, 2016) was launched with a redefined vision and mission. In addition to the childcare and support in the BoH Children’s Village, community based childcare and support to marginalized families were intensified during this phase.

-          A total of 156 OVC (82M and 74F) were growing under the institutional childcare and support program during the period.

-          Children that reached the age of 18 were reintegrated with their relatives. Accordingly, out of the 156 children mentioned above, 80 children (44M and 36F) were reintegrated with their relative during this phase.

-          All the children admitted to BoH’s institutional childcare could receive a well-organized and standardized pre-school education in the Bridge Kindergarten.

-          The Bridge Magdalena Academy was upgraded to full-cycle elementary school (grade 1 to 8) with construction of one additional school block. Formerly, the academy could educate children up to grade 5 only.

-          BoH rendered full support to all the 156 children under its institutional childcare so that they could attend their education from kindergarten to university levels. The re-integrated children also get the necessary support and follow up to pursue their education, even to university level.

-          Under the Community Based Childcare, which is the second approach of BoH’s  development program, 50 OVC (25M & 25F) from Gondar city and neighboring woredas of Chilga and Dembia were receiving  full support (educational, nutrition, health, clothing, and psychosocial) each year.

-          250 people living with HIVAIDS (PLWHA), some of whom were OVC families, received training and income generating support (IGA) to run their businesses and support their families by themselves.

-          An average of 50 highly marginalized people living with HIV/AIDS were receiving basic items needed for better life every year.

-          With the aim of augmenting household diet and generating incomes, 476 families were trained on vegetables gardening and given vegetable seeds. Accordingly, each family could cultivate 150m2 to 250m2 of backyard gardens and grew vegetables.

-          In collaboration with concerned government offices and community based organizations, BoH has conducted HIV/AIDS awareness creation events for a total of 171,337 people during this phase.

-          On an average, 247,000 tree seedlings were raised and 212,200 were distributed each year in the area as part of the natural resource conservation and environmental protection interventions of BoH. A survey conducted on survival rate indicated that an average of 77.5% of the planted tree seedlings survived and continued to grow successfully.

-          BoH has supported the integrated soil and water conservation works of the community at Angereb watershed Bukaya Sheleko near Gondar city. Angereb watershed drains into the Angereb dam, which is the source of water supply for Gondar city.

-          As part of its water supply development initiative, BoH has developed 4 springs, 3 hand dug well and 5 shallow wells that are benefiting a total of 595 households. Moreover, water management committees were trained and assigned at each site.
