Community Based Intervention Program

Bridge of Hope’s Community Based Intervention Program includes community empowerment, capacity building, collaborative partnerships, and targeted interventions.

The BoH Community-Based Intervention Program is designed to address the needs of highly vulnerable children and their families living under extreme burden of poverty.

Community OHVC Sponsorship Support

OHVC Family Income Generation Activities (IGA) Support

Interventions of this program are implemented through the Community OHVC Sponsorship Support and OHVC Family Income Generation Activities (IGA) Support. In other words, BoH as a charity organization, focused on community sponsorship program, in addition to institutional childcare, in which foster care adoption, child reunification and reintegration programs are included.

Partnerships

In this regard, BoH has a partnership with donor organizations such as Haddis Ministry (HM), World’s children, We Saw the Light Children’s Village and Corvallis Gondar Sister City Association (CGSCA).

HM is a USA based volunteer fundraising team which is securing a considerable budget for all beneficiaries of community based childcare program.

Support Services

The program provides monthly full package support that mainly includes food and nutrition, educational supports, health services and physiological supports for the targeted children.

In 2023 alone, Haddis Ministry supported a total 201 students (108 M and 93F) from kindergarten level to high school.

In addition to creating access to quality education, tutorial classes are arranged for the students to enhance their performance. One of the noteworthy supports that is improving the performance of students is the provision of “Faffa” breakfast from Monday to Saturday on regular basis. Faffa is a wheat flour fortified with skimmed milk powder, chickpeas, sugar, vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, Nicotinic Acid, and Folic Acid), Minerals (Iron, Iodine and Calcium phosphate) and enzymes (Faffa Food Products) that are essential for mental and physical growth of children. School materials like uniforms, school bag, exercise books, book rent, lunch box, pen and pensile are provided for these students.

OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE Community Based Intervention Program

Economic Empowerment & Infrastructure

  • Enable youth and care givers to develop the culture of saving and asset creation by providing them startup capital, essential skills training based on applicable economic empowerment philosophy and frameworks.
  • Provision of clean water for the community by drilling deep and shallow wells as well as by developing spring water. This activity has been accomplished in partnering with Corvallis Gondar Sister City Association (CGSCA).
  • House rent and monthly food support for needy households - This support is given only for those children who have no relatives or whose families are economically poor. In order to ease the burden of housing cost and food shortage, BoH arranged this solution for families that host the reintegrated children.
  • Support to children with special needs under BoH’s Desta Academy – With budget support from Haddis Ministry, BoH launched a pilot project that supports children with special need due to various disabilities. One of the existing buildings was selected, rearranged and furnished by the budget support from Haddis Ministry. The necessary materials, utilities and school materials, manpower, teaching aids were purchased and 8 children were attending special classes in 2023.
  • Home Visit /Children’s Supervision - Haddis Ministry sponsored the children who have family problems and need special attention. These children were visited as per the set schedules. Social workers are responsible to handle this task and render counseling services during the visits.

Health, Education & Community Support

  • Provision of continuous support to those re-integrated children until they finish their higher education and get employment or be able to generate their own income.
  • The global effect of COVID-19 pandemic which affected every community of the world has also affected by far the life of those extremely poor people like beneficiaries of HM supports. Therefore, awareness creation training was given for family heads on prevention of the pandemic in July 2020. Sanitary materials and food support was also given for family heads of the sponsored children.
  • Shower and laundry access for community children- The children have access to bath soap, liquid soap and towels while taking shower and washing their cloths. These services are given to the children in the 8 bathrooms constructed in BoH compound through the support of Haddis Ministries.
  • Provision of health service for community children- health education is given on disease prevention and personal hygiene to children’s families. All the children under our program undergo medical checkup regularly to ensure that all our children are free from any health problem. On the other hand, all beneficiaries were supported to get medical services both at local clinics and specialized hospitals when they get sick.
