Bridge of Hope: Raising Leaders from the Edge of Despair

In the early 2000s, when the HIV/AIDS crisis and extreme poverty left countless children abandoned and forgotten, a bold and compassionate visionary couple arrived at the historic Gondar city of Amhara region. In 2001, driven by faith in God and humanity, Mr. Timotheus and Mrs. Magdalena Augustberger of Switzerland started a holistic intervention under an NGO named Bridge of Hope (BoH) - an intervention that would go on to transform not only lives, but generations.

What began as an act of rescue - taking in HIV-orphaned children under four and babies abandoned due to poverty - quickly evolved into something far greater: a model of holistic, sustainable transformation.

On the former 20 hectares of land that shifted to the current 7 hectares of thriving compound, BoH built more than infrastructure - it built opportunity and great possibility. The once-empty degraded lands were changed into lively green landscapes hosting a vibrant children’s village, complete with family-style homes, schools from kindergarten through high school, and vocational training centers for woodwork, metalwork, hollow block production, and terrazzo tile making. Around it flourished a dairy farm, vegetable gardens, poultry units, and apiaries. Clean water supply to the surrounding communities, sanitation services, and environmental regeneration initiatives have restored both dignity and ecosystems.

After a meticulous preparatory work up to 2001, BoH admitted its first batch of 120 highly vulnerable children, including orphans, abandoned infants, and those with disabilities, in partnership with government offices and community leaders. These children arrived with little more than survival behind them. What they found instead was love, structure, education, and a renewed sense of future. This ongoing intervention continues each year, empowering numerous vulnerable children to realize their potential and build sustainable livelihoods.

Years later, the results are extraordinary - many of these children have grown into vibrant adults and graduated from universities and colleges, stepping confidently into professional careers. Others have been reunited with families or adopted into loving homes. All carry a shared identity; resilient, disciplined, and guided by values that inspire those around them. So far, over 70 children have graduated from universities and colleges, and over 30 have undergone vocational skill training and started generating incomes.

Bethlehem Teka, fondly known as Beti, is a shining example of transformation nurtured at the Gondar BoH Children’s Village. Growing up in the Village, Beti distinguished herself early on through unwavering dedication to her education. From kindergarten through university, she consistently ranked first among her peers, ultimately earning regional recognition and a prestigious trophy for her academic excellence.

In 2014, Beti graduated from Jimma University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering - an extraordinary achievement that marked the beginning of her journey beyond personal success.

Today, Beti has come home to where her journey first began, now serving as the Director of the BoH Kindergarten in Gondar City. In this role, she leads with compassion, clarity, and vision, qualities forged through her own life experience. Once a child who depended on care, opportunity, and encouragement, she has risen to become a guiding light, mentoring, protecting, and inspiring the next generation.

Beti’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of love and belief in a child’s potential. It is a full-circle journey that embodies hope realized and purpose fulfilled. Through her leadership, she is not only giving back but also planting seeds of possibility, ensuring that every child in her care receives the same foundation of love, education, and opportunity that once changed the course of her own life.
